Tuesday, February 6th 2024 will go down in history for the Republican Party for a lot of reasons from the failure to impeach a Cabinet Secretary on the first attempt in 160 years, the resignation of the Chairman of the RNC, and the ruling against their party nominee that he has immunity from his crimes.

A bunch of super smarter people than me are writing all about that debacle. I wanted to look at something that is getting a little overlooked as the Senate Republicans just killed the Border Bill they demanded. This entire moment perfectly illustrates how the MAGA Republican Party is eating its own and why I am confident they are finally disintegrating.

Attacking not just the base but the foundation

One thing we constantly talk about in politics is ‘playing to the base’ and how important it is to recognize who your main supporters are and please them. We constantly hear how the Republicans are almost constantly feeding their base and have grown increasingly extreme in the process.

Now they have entered a whole new phase. The Republicans are only playing to one person. Donald Trump. In doing so they are willing to burn anyone that doesn’t agree with what his corrosive ego desires. Trump wants the border to be a mess so he can use it as his number one campaign issue. That’s it. They cannot do anything to improve the border this year so they have taken their marching orders.

In the process they have turned on their own negotiators but more unreal is they have turned on one of their own most vocal and stalwart supporters: The Border Patrol Council.

How much have they turned on them? Speaker ‘Moses Drowning’ Johnson and Baroness Von Ingraham thought it was a good idea to mock their support for the bill as just wanting more pay.

The Border Patrol is their people

You would be hard pressed to find an organization that more staunchly backs the Republicans and their agenda. Their union the National Border Patrol Council has fervently endorsed Trump in both his runs and is all but certain to again this time. I mean…read this release from 2020:

President Trump has always prioritized the safety of the American people and the rule of law, but in Joe Biden's America, danger and lawlessness would run rampant. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have championed radical immigration policies that are tantamount to open borders and pledged to prioritize illegal aliens over the American people. Under President Trump's leadership, illegal immigration is down to historic lows and criminal cartels have been disbanded at the source. In 2016, the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) endorsed President Trump based on his promise to bolster U.S. border security and protect the American people. President Trump has delivered on his promises, and today the NBPC endorsed President Trump's re-election to ensure four more years of security and prosperity across the United States.

In 2015 during the height of the Black Lives Matter Protests when they needed extra police who would be happy and eager to do the bidding of Trump, and then Attorney General William Barr, they brought in Border Patrol officers to Washington D.C. The union did not complain one bit.

Whistleblowers have accused the Border Patrol of being overrun with racists and bigots. Their open adoration of Trump during his campaigns and Administration were unnerving for Federal employees to be so openly partisan and they never missed a chance to pose with their favorite authoritarian.

You literally don’t have a Federal agency or law enforcement organization, short of the Constitutional Sheriff’s nutjobs, that love the Republican Party and Trump more than the Border Patrol and their union. They have been eagerly campaigning for passage of the bill since it was rolled out. The union president and vice president have been regulars on all the news channels including NewsMax and Fox to no avail.

The Republicans told them to shut up. I mean…almost literally when I say that. Even Fox News can’t believe it. They understand that this is their constituency. They have been begging for help and hosting Republican governors and members of Congress. When they finally get it this is the answer. No.

What does it mean?

This small microcosm of the larger issue is incredibly telling. The Republican coalition has been fracturing since Trump came on the scene but for the most part they have been able to keep everyone in line with bullying and offering them the red meat for their various constituencies.

Abortion? Gone! Tax cuts for the rich? Too easy. Christian nationalism? Meet the new Speaker. Over and over they kept them all together but in recent months the entire house of cards is crumbling.

Fundraising is cratering after milking the rubes and grassroots continuously to fuel Trump’s lifestyle, permanent campaign, and never ending legal issues. The knives are out for anyone who strays. They are primarying their most dedicated members for any excuse. The lunatics they have elected are starting to pay for their insanity like George Santos…or whatever his name is.

The results are failures like the impeachment vote yesterday and the ousting of Ronna Romney McDaniel during an election year.

Something I tell Democratic groups and candidates I speak with often is that the Republicans hate each other as much, if not more, than they hate us.

Eventually that hate will eat you alive. The buffet is rolling. We have to keep working to make sure our house is in order and stay out of their way as they self immolate.

I’m just happy to watch it burn.
