We can’t forget

I was struck by how Donald Trump reacted during the debate two weeks ago when David Muir asked him if he had any regrets about January 6th. To say it was over the top would be like saying Trump’s skin is a healthy alabaster glow and not weirdly pumpkin orange.

He lost his shit. Just watch this.

Why? Because he knows that it was his last act as President of the United States. While he and his supporters want to convince us that life was better in those halcyon days they insist we have to ignore that whole pandemic thing and the attempt to overthrow Congress.

I’m reminded of the old joke. “…well…other than that…how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?”

Donald Trump’s final major action as President was to unleash an assault on the very government he led. Listen to his words in that video. Listen to how he refers to the Capitol Police and defenders of the Capitol as “the other side.” He was the President. The Capitol Police were his side except they weren’t.

The rioters, Proud Boys, and Oath Keepers were his side. The violent racists and lunatics were his side. The Q-Anon nutjobs were his side.

They still are.

Fight Like Hell

The other part of that answer includes the main talking point used to defend him from responsibility. That he said “peacefully and patriotically.” Here is the thing. He used those words a single time. He used the word “fight” over a hundred times in the same speech. They got the message loud and clear: Fight like hell.

There is a new documentary out from director Jon Long called just that, Fight Like Hell, now available for free on YouTube. They present a harrowing inside look with never before seen footage shot by a former military combat videographer who was in the middle of the action for the unfolding events from shortly after the election through January 6th.

It reminds us of just how organized and planned it all was. Steve Bannon promised chaos long before that day. It was never going to be a peaceful protest. The plan was to disrupt things so that the vote would be postponed and give their allies in Congress time to kick it back to their friendly states and steal the entire thing.

We have all the evidence in the world and yet none of those organizers has faced nearly any consequences of note. There is solace in knowing Jack Smith just dropped a 180-page brief in his case against Trump, Bannon is detoxing in a federal prison for four months, and Alex Jones is having his empire dissolved by a bankruptcy court to pay the Sandy Hook families.

But, most of the instigators remain scot free from Roger Stone to Ali Alexander. We also know they are at it again with allies spread across the states to undermine the next election.

It would have only taken seven words

A follower on Twitter who is also a fellow West Point grad made a great point to me today. All Trump had to do before January 6th and during that fateful day was utter seven words to his staff: “Deploy the National Guard to the Capitol.” That’s it. He had that power and responsibility. He made the decision not to and everything that flowed from there is on him.

The latest lie is that he did order it but the order was “ignored.” Just another lie. He did not. No one else had the authority to do so. Just him. He could deploy the National Guard to the District of Columbia and chose not to.

In the end we have one choice. Remind people. Push to hold him and his allies accountable and don’t let him memory hole it and act like it had nothing to do with Trump. He instigated an insurrection and has no business being anywhere near the White House.
