Timing is everything
We’ve been talking about the dozens of Executive Orders issued by Donald Trump since taking office. It’s been overwhelming and that was their goal. Buried in each one have been monstrous things like hiring freezes and now the complete cut off of foreign aid.
They did it fast on purpose. They knew that Democrats on the Hill would still be in the finger pointing and ‘finding their parking spaces’ phase of settling in. They were well aware that many of the PAC’s and civil rights groups are getting organized and desperate for donations after a bruising campaign and the dry season for political donations. Finally, they knew the Democratic National Committee would be going through a leadership transition and all of the turbulence that goes with that.
But, we can’t let them run roughshod over us any longer. Ancient soldiers figured out how to resist a cavalry charge or onslaught of arrows was with a well organized, trained, and ready shield wall.
It’s time for ours.
Progress or just hope?
We are starting to see some small gains. There are what I like to call ‘green shoots’ of progress like the desert in the rainy season.
The outrageous Executive Order on birthright citizenship didn’t last five minutes in Federal District Court in Seattle before the judge, a Reagan appointee, with forty years on the bench mocked the stupidity of it. The New York Times had this report,
“In a hearing held three days after Mr. Trump issued his executive order, a Federal District Court judge, John C. Coughenour, sided with Washington, Arizona, Illinois and Oregon, the four states that sued, signing a restraining order that blocks Mr. Trump’s executive order for 14 days, renewable upon expiration. “This is a blatantly unconstitutional order,” he said.
“Frankly,” he continued, challenging Trump administration lawyers, “I have difficulty understanding how a member of the bar would state unequivocally that this is a constitutional order. It just boggles my mind.”
Witnesses reported the attorney for Trump never even made it through his first sentence before the judge cut him off. That hands Trump his first court loss just three days in.
On the Hill Democrats are organizing like the Progressive Caucus on the despicable pardons of 1500 January 6th criminals. New York’s Dan Goldman spoke about the hypocrisy and lies being spread by the Republicans.
But, there is much to do. We have to get organized and find ways to resist this outrageous movement.
DNC Elections
There are a lot of talented leaders running for the leadership positions at the DNC. We had Ben Wikler on the Sunday show three weeks ago to discuss his race for Chairman. I was pleased to see my friend Dr. Chris Jones throw his hat in the ring for the Vice Chairmanship.
I interviewed him for On Democracy with FPWellman this week. Dr. Chris Jones grew up Arkansas. He attended Morehouse College on a full NASA Scholarship, then went on to study at MIT earning a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, a Master’s Degree in Technology & Policy, and a Ph.D. in Urban Planning. After becoming an ordained minister, he returned home to Arkansas. He was the Democratic nominee for Arkansas Governor in 2022, launched Vortex PAC and has served as co-chair of Dirt Road Democrats driving rural outreach and recruiting.
We discussed his priorities, the need to move quickly to organize, and actually reach average voters across the country. The secret election by DNC members will be next week, February 1st.
Shields up!!!
Is there any over arching United commission made up of various leading fighters for democracy to agree with a winning strategy and apportioning responsibility for specific objectives? Something like a WWII Coalition. TLP. You. JoJo from Jerz. Joyce Vance. Heather CR.. ACLU. The heaviest hitters who make a difference. Who’s coordinating the effort and determining assignments ?
