Donald Trump takes us to war
He has once again violated the Constitution and no one knows what comes next
We have started a war with Iran
Donald Trump has announced this evening that U.S. bombers struck Iran’s nuclear sites.
This is a violation of the Constitution in about as clear a term as there can be. There is no Authorization of the Use of Military Force or a war declaration from Congress that covers striking Iran.
I’m sure many will wonder what those are. I’ve already seen MAGA bots coming out saying “Oh yeah…well…explain how Obama bombed Syria, Fred. "I’ll wait.” Super easy, Karen, the Post 9/11 Authorization of Use of Military Force passed in 2001 that covered Afghanistan and the fight against Al-Qaeda and the 2002 joint statement that covered Iraq and what came to be known as the Global War on Terror.
With that wide lane we fought “Al-Qaeda affiliates” in places as far as the Phillipppines, Somalia. and Syria. It was a wide open book for killing pretty much anyone who used the term Al-Qaeda in a communication.
As far as Yemen, the reasoning is that we were defending U.S. forces and shipping that had been attacked in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels. That would fall under the War Powers Act and in theory Trump would have to seek Congressional approval.
This isn’t any of that.
I have already seen people arguing well he didn’t “declare war” so it’s not a violation of the Constitution. These are people that think that ‘declaring war’ is like Michael Scott in The Office declaring bankruptcy.
Dropping bombs on a sovereign country is an “act or war” so he doesn’t need to stand on the steps of the White House and yell, “I DECLARE WAR!”
The B-2’s kind of covered that.
This was a unilateral attack against a sovereign nation that has not directly attacked the United States. Believe me. I am no fan of Iran. They were the driving force behind the terrorists and insurgents in Iraq. They are the ones that introduced shaped charged IED’s that killed hundreds of Americans.
They have caused the suffering of millions and there is U.S. blood on their hands. They are very bad people. I will not shed a tear for the Iranian mullahs, their military, and certainly not for the evil Revolutionary Guards.
But that’s not the point. The President could have done this the right way. Consulted Congress. Passed an authorization. It is a violation of our most sacred document that we all swear and oath to uphold and defend…including Donald Trump.
This is about Trump’s massive ego and desperation to look tough after his failed parade.
Military families once again into the breach
What I am thinking about tonight is military families around the world that once again find themselves in the crosshairs for a politicians gain. As I write this there are anxious families around the globe worried about their loved ones and even their own lives as we have no idea how Iran will retaliate.
My own family still has members serving. They have kids. They are going to bed not knowing if they will be called into battle…again.
There have been rumors for years of Iranian sleeper cells in the U.S. We know they have surrogates around the world willing to act on their behalf. Will it be a terrorist attack on a mall? How about rockets into our African embassies? Truck bomb in Italy?
We have no idea. Trump has no idea. He ignored our intelligence agencies and by early accounts the entire national security apparatus. But, he looks tough.
Our all volunteer military will once again carry the burden to fight, die, and survive while Fox News and the Republicans pop corks and declare themselves heroes.
He will be speaking tonight and I will be watching but I ask you to think of our service members and their families. Pray for their safety. Check on the ones you know because one thing I know for sure. Donald Trump does not give a shit about them.
