It's the f*cking nail!
"Experts" tell us to not fall for distractions but don't see the big thing right there
This may shock you but I’m not a highly paid Democratic consultant. I’m an independent media creator and advocate. I’m not getting millions of dollars from the DNC. I just checked my bank account and oddly I’ve gotten zero. Right now just over 280 of you great Americans are paid subscribers for this newsletter. I’d love to grow that significantly so I can keep doing this work and not have to find a real job.
All the ‘experts’
Politico Magazine columnist Rachael Bade came out with a new piece this week discussing how Democrats should be messaging and fighting back against the onslaught of Executive Orders, crimes, and moves by Trump and the shadow President, Elon Musk.
To make her point she turned to experts David Axelrod. Rahm Emanuel, and James Carville. They decided that Democrats going down to USAID to was a huge mistake and they were doing it all wrong.
Here is the opening few paragraphs:
But relaunching the resistance to defend one of the least popular corners of the federal budget could be a monster miscalculation — and some prominent Democrats told me they have serious strategic reservations about how their party is fighting back.
When I asked veteran strategist David Axelrod whether Democrats were “walking into a trap” on defending foreign aid, he literally finished my sentence.
“My heart is with the people out on the street outside USAID, but my head tells me: ‘Man, Trump will be well satisfied to have this fight,’” he said. “When you talk about cuts, the first thing people say is: Cut foreign aid.”
Rahm Emanuel — the former House leader, Chicago mayor and diplomat — told me much the same: “You don’t fight every fight. You don’t swing at every pitch. And my view is — while I care about the USAID as a former ambassador — that’s not the hill I’m going to die on,” he said.
So, they believe that defending the completely illegal dismantling of USAID, which was created in legislation in 1961, is the wrong hill to die one. That Democrats were falling into the Republican trap of defending foreign aid….which, you know, public opinion doesn’t really like.
Not to be out done with these two she turned to James Carville whom you might remember from the campaign he won in 1992.
It’s not that Democrats should call off the fight against Musk. Longtime campaign strategist James Carville said it’s a winning message for his party to cry foul on a billionaire coming in and slashing government services for Americans.
“I know this: When the public doesn’t have the bureaucracy, they notice it pretty quickly,” he said. “Here you have some nice people doing a good job, then some billionaire comes in and takes a wrecking ball to everything.”
But Carville, Axelrod and Emanuel agree that Democrats need to save their outrage for issues that will resonate with voters: Cutting benefits. Rising prices. Not slashing foreign aid.
You know you heard it like me…right?
“It’s the economy, stupid!” (insert ridiculous Louisiana drawl)
After all that worked so well in….1992.
Meanwhile here in 2025
I can’t help but think about a great video from a decade ago these days. Did you ever see the important relationship video from about 11 years ago about ‘the nail?’ It feels like everyone is worried about the headaches…and the feelings of pressure…but…well…
You see the problem we face right now is that it’s THE FUCKING NAIL!
The nail is Elon Musk and the illegal dismantling of our government. That’s the nail in the head. They aren’t trying to cut “foreign aid” or reduce costs of government. They aren’t seeking out illegal payments or corruption.
Elon Musk and his band of 20-something idiots are literally dismantling our government and it’s all part of their weird ass dystopian fantasy of actually taking down world governments and privatizing everything with billionaires running it all like private corporations.
Heather Cox Richardson touched on it in her newsletter this week and I invited the author she cited, Gil Duran, on On Democracy which will premier tonight exclusively on the MeidasTouch Network.
Gil wrote this terrifying piece this week that I can’t recommend enough. The Nerd Reich. This stuff…well…it’s insane.
The Democrats have one mission. Stop it by any means possible. Oppose it at every step and make sure it ends now and kill it all in the nest. They aren’t going to stop until we do.
The idea that the issue is the price of eggs, or to ignore only the “big things” is fucking ludicrous at this point. It’s all an excuse to do nothing or get sucked into chasing our tails.
Americans are terrified right now and having Democratic consultants like those three clowns and ancient fossil elected saying “he promised to lower egg prices” is so tone deaf as to be cringeworthy.
Right now there are people losing their jobs and healthcare.
Also, that stupid foreign aid no one cares about? USAID buys over $2 billion in U.S. agricultural products. That just stopped.
Maybe we should flush all of the Democratic consultants that keep trying to MEASURE and FOLLOW public opinion and listen to people that are actually trying to CHANGE public opinion.
That’s what fucking leaders do. Now fucking do it.
Don’t miss an all new On Democracy Sunday this weekend!
We built ODS to take on the network Sunday shows. I challenge you to find a better line up on them this weekend! Be there!
Nailed it with this one. Pun fully intended. I like this chunk from Paul Musgrave's newsletter:
"Conceding the foreign aid fight without even considering contesting it is a terrible move—D.C. brain at its worst. Being afraid to stand up for foreign aid will let the worst impulses of isolationism win, and for the worst possible reasons and in the worst possible way with the most dire consequences for the beneficiaries of aid at home and abroad. If you can’t fight for starving kids, you shouldn’t be in politics; if you can’t fight for American workers, you shouldn’t be in American politics."

It’s 2% of the budget. It’s also soft power
Now China &Russia will move right in
The image around the world see this is who American are. Providing food & vaccines etc especially vaccines so diseases don’t spread. The reason it was started John F Kennedy till Biden good will and relationships matter
It’s not the only hill but it is important to stand up for its existence!!
