New Podcast: We've Been Here Before with Kevin Kruse
Decades of studying conflicts over race, rights, and religion and the making of modern conservatism have taught him the dangers of forgetting the past
My favorite Twitter historian
Princeton historian and author Kevin Kruse found himself in the fight for our country somewhat inadvertently. After publishing his second book in 2015 his publisher asked him to join Twitter to promote it along with their other authors at the time. He used it mostly for ‘This day in history’ posts and mundane day-to-day things for a few months when he started seeing the discussions over Confederate monuments and their complete disregard for the facts. He couldn’t resist wading in with the facts.
Hardly a day goes by where Kevin doesn’t find himself correcting a distortion of the mythology of our nation’s roots or batting down Dinesh D’Souza like an annoying gnat buzzing about in his porch. Much of that work has found its way into his latest book that he co-edited with Julian E. Selizer, ‘Myth America: Historians Take On the Biggest Legends and Lies About Our Past. A fascinating book of essays by 20 leading historians and other academics debunking popular beliefs regarding events in American history, as well as more contemporary issues.
I’ve been a fan for years and our conversation doesn’t disappoint.

Dr. Kevin Kruse is a Professor of History at Princeton University. He specializes in the political, social, and urban/suburban history of twentieth-century America, with a particular interest in conflicts over race, rights, and religion and the making of modern conservatism. He has published books and dozens of articles and his most recent publication is ‘Myth America’ a collection of essays from historians taking on the biggest legends and lies about our past and is available everywhere.

I’m a huge history buff, but I always found it shameful that we were taught “World History” from the American perspective and how we may have contributed rather than giving credit or shame where it was due. As one example, it wasn’t until I was in the military that I learned there were other allied troops in Korea and Vietnam fighting (or policing) alongside U.S. forces.
As we’ve learned, history has often been written by the victors or those who had been blessed with education (often the religious).
I’m glad to hear that someone has come forward to interject some truth into some longstanding propaganda.
