Vital interview Fred. This needs to be disseminated as far as possible. Bless this Rabbi and his family. I can’t imagine the fear he, his wife, their sweet boy and his siblings must be living with. But the critical message is don’t live in abject fear. Do something constructive to change the outcome. Connect with like-minded others and yes, keep on fighting and informing others with the truth. Someone will hear you.
Wow. Thank you for this excellent conversation. My heart breaks for how trans people, especially children, are being used as pawns for all the conservative hatred & fear mongering. Please invite the Rabbi back; his is a voice that needs to be heard.
I feel like most Americans will identify with Rabbi Goldman and his trans child. But most Americans will also see how Lia Thomas went from 554th, 65th & 32nd in the country, competing as a man, to 5th, 1st & 8th, in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle & 1650 freestyle, competing as a woman... and identify with the cis-women Lia competed against.
Not sure what the answer is. I doubt it'll fit on a bumper sticker.
One. That's called an 'N of 1' as an example being used over and over and over to bash any trans kid wanting to participate in sports and is now the full time job of Riley Gaines who is making tons of money talking about it. This is exactly what we talk about in the interview where normally level headed Americans, like you, are being sucked into the propaganda and smoke to side with truly ruthless evil machinations. They are using a single example to attack an entire community. Here is a story that actually lays out the truth abotu Lia Thomas and why she was allowed to compete as a woman.
We can probably agree that the value of participating in sport is more than just who wins and who loses. We probably agree that everybody gains from participating in sports, and that participating in sport has a valuable effect on young people -- boys, girls, cis, trans.
Gender and sex aren't the same thing. Sex isn't the duality that we -- and sports, treat it as. Intersex individuals like Caster Semanya make that clear.
To try and preserve the duality structure we've set up in sports, we've decreed that a person who went through puberty male can't just declare themselves female and be allowed to take part in womens sports. They have to meet additional criteria.
Lia Thomas appeared to meet those criteria. She took the appropriate hormones and, I believe, met criteria that included testosterone levels.
But, from the point of view of the women who would've been 1st in the nation in the 500 free or 5th in the 200 free... Lia's jump from 65th and 554th hurt.
I have no idea who Riley Gaines is. He sounds like an asshat. But we need more data. We need a larger N before we can make final decisions about sports like rugby or swimming. Rght now, it appears having going through puberty male gives you an advantage in some womens sports.
Mr. Wellman, if you weren’t on flight from Chicago to Sarasota today, then your identical twin brother was!

Riley Gains is or was an Olympic swimmer.
